William Gunning King - 1859-1940
William Gunning King lived at Petersfield in Hampshire.
He was a painter, etcher & illustrator who studied art at the South Kensington & R.A Schools.
A vigorous illustrator of rural life, with a genius for light & shade.
He contributed to ‘The Sporting & Dramatic News’ 1896, ‘Illustrated London News’, ‘The Graphic’, ‘Punch’, ‘The Sketch’ & ‘The English Illustrated Magazine”.
Gunning King exhibited at the R.A, R.P, R.B.A & also in the provinces
He was commissioned by the Liverpool firm of ‘Bibby’s’ to create illustrations for their advertisements calendars & quarterly magazines promoting their animal feeds.
No one captures the essence of farming in his era quite like Gunning King.
