'Champion Shorthorn Ox' in a barn.
Ox in a barn interior with stockman looking on holding a turnip with a dog at his side. Oil on canvas 18 X 24 inches, in original magnificent Gilt frame, signed J. Pitman (fl. 1820-1846) Together with engraving by the artist of the Ox, inscribed, 'Bred & fed by the Miss's Strickland of Apperley Court, Glous'. Aged 5 years & ten months when exhibited at the Smithfield Club Show, Christmas 1832, where he received the Silver Medal of the Soc. Neat weight 232 stone of 8ibs, loose fat 30 stone. Provenance Apperley Court and thence by descent.
